Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world; launched back in 1877, it has been held every year without fail ever since. That is, until now……
For the first time in history, due to the Coronavirus, Wimbledon has been officially cancelled this year. With all that has ensued since this pandemic crippled the world the announcement that it would be cancelled came as no surprise but with the would be start date fast approaching I have been reflecting on my personal Wimbledon experience from a couple of years back.
I was fortunate enough to be invited by Ralph Lauren’s London Wholesale and Retail team to spend the day with them in their VIP cabana and experience the semi-final championship match between Venus Williams and Johanna Konta on Centre Court.
Whilst I am not an avid sportsman I have always loved a bit of tennis and I have to say this experience was particularly thrilling and exciting.
From the weather to the sport, the hospitality and the company, nothing was short of perfection.
We were greeted at the tent with a very traditional glass of Pimm’s followed by strawberries and cream. Before lunch was served we were given the opportunity to tour the grounds and witness some of the numerous matches in play.
Lunch was a delicious three course affair accompanied by a very consistent flow of Whispering Angel, the perfect accompaniment to the poached salmon main course and the magical summer atmosphere all around.
Following lunch we all moved to Centre court to see the drama unfold. I have to admit it was tense and electrifying to see these two greats battling against each other and I really got into it!
We spent the rest of the day shipping Champagne as the sun set and I will be forever grateful for the invitation and experience.
My only slight regret is my outfit choice…..head to two GUCCI was probably not the right etiquette when I had been invited by Ralph Lauren…..ooops!!!
I truly hope that COVID-19 only stands to interrupt the sports calendars of 2020 and come next year we will all be reflecting on this time as a distant memory. Stay safe my BC Fashionistas xxx
